About Us
Sarah has lived at The Woodlands since 1987, but since meeting Zac in 2015, they have embarked on an exciting restoration of the stables as well as sharing the passion for building the Fifinella & Gainsborough Retreats, with the help of local carpenter Adam. Sarah revels in the equestrian elements of the property, whilst Zac’s interests lie with nature and the outdoors, particularly mountain walking, road cycling and mountain biking. They share their 10 acre smallholding with a pony, three cats and a German Shepherd named Ludo, as well as a host of wildlife, ancient woodland, springtime narcissi, bluebell carpets and a plethora of fungi!
A Place To Call Home
We fully appreciate how lucky we are to live in this stunning location, with far-reaching views to the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) one way, Malvern Hills the other, and rolling Herefordshire countryside lying in between. It is our pleasure to share this little piece of paradise with you and hope that you leave with special memories of your stay.
A Lifelong Love Of Horses
The equine influence is ever present at The Woodlands, from horses in the paddocks, the stables, arenas and even the names of the cabins. Sarah and her mother Jackie arrived in 1987 with just their own horses. Once settled in Orcop, Jackie began offering livery and it soon became apparent that there was a demand for riding lessons. Sarah’s old pony Bugs Bunny and local pony Toppo were perfect for the job. These occasional riding lessons for local children soon grew into a thriving riding school with as many as 23 horses at one time. Sarah specialised further as a youth dressage instructor, culminating in riders being selected for international competition, squads and teams. Sarah continues to work with youth rider Jess and pony Pom … who you may see training in the arenas during your stay.
Inspired By Family History
Although Sarah has her own history working with horses, it was the legacy of her great-grandfather, jockey Joe Childs, which inspired the naming of the cabins. In 1999, more than 40 years after his death, Joe was ranked 11th in the Racing Post list of Top 50 jockeys of the 20th century. During his career, he won fifteen classics, including three wins at the Derby with Fifinella (the ‘flying filly’ – 1916), Gainsborough (1918) and Coronach (1926). He was jockey to King George V (1925-35), with the ‘proudest moment of his life’ winning the 1000 Guineas on Scuttle (1928). The ‘best race he ever rode’ was also for the King – the 1933 Hardwicke Stakes on Limelight.
